My Eyesight Improved!

It’s a slight exaggeration to say I’ve been as blind as a bat since the age of 10.  My fifth grade teacher was the first to notice I struggled with my eyesight because I was always disrupting the kids sitting around me, asking them for their notes.  I also was giving myself headaches squinting so hard to see the board.

When my parents bought me my first pair of eye glasses, the world crystallized into beautiful sharp focus.  I could actually SEE individual blades of grass and perfect leaves on the tree.  Things were not a blur anymore.  Glasses became an extension of my body.  They were the first thing I reached for in the morning and the last thing I took off at night (and sometime I wouldn’t even take them off as I would drift off asleep while reading).

Every year though, my eyesight deteriorated.  I was warned that my sight was on a downward trajectory and would get worse and worse the older I got until I hit 40 or so which at the point things would stabilize (but not improve).

True to my doctor’s prediction, every year my eyesight got worse and worse.  I flirted a bit with contact lenses but they strained my eyes and I just couldn’t get used to them.  I went in for a consultation for laser eye surgery at one of the best eye clinics in the city and I was rendered ineligible for 2 out of the 3 procedures. The 3rd procedure was similar to the procedure used to remove cataracts and those wonderful doctors stated it would go against their code of ethics to perform the surgery as I would need to be at least 50 years old to be eligible. So laser eye surgery was out for me as well. Back to my glasses and the inevtiable decline.

A Revelation

The last time I had my eyesight check up was 4 years ago.  Yes, not great but I went ahead and went for my check up.  Even though so many aspects of my health were improving since I changed my diet 2 years ago, my eyesight was not as objects were getting blurry and out of focus.  Time to see the doctor and get an even stronger prescription, correlating with weaker eyesight, as it always does.

So I went 2 weeks ago for my check up and guess what?

I was thrilled and over the moon!!!!!  My best case scenario for my eyesight to remain steady, and not decline.  I frankly didn’t think it would actually improve even though I should have known better as my diabetic mother (also on the same paleo diet) had her test last fall and HER doctor confirmed that her eyesight improved.

I knew people would demand proof so below are my prescription from 2009 and the one from two weeks, 2013.   So stoked!!!

  1. Thanks for this post. I am nearsighted, got lazer surgery in 2002 and 2003 (2 times – my eyes were so bad had to do it twice) and it’s been nice to see after not being able to since 1963 – yeah, 3rd grade I was asking the guy by me what was written on the board (sound familiar?), that led to glasses until contacts in 1972.
However, now that I’m eating paleo my eyesight has not improved any. It had started to slip before paleo so maybe this will stop it? Gives me hope at least, that the cleaner I can eat the better I will see and perhaps I will no longer need the glasses I use to drive.

    • Thanks for stopping by 2Rae. It took me two years of paleo eating before I saw improvements. Like you I was hoping to just stop the decline so it was a pleasant surprise to actually see an improvement, minor, but nonetheless, still an improvement.

  2. Maybe I need my eyes checked, but I don’t see any difference in the two scripts? Looks like the doc wrote the same numbers. Also, in the paragraph before you showed the scripts You actually stated your eyesight had NOT improved even though other health markers had since you changed your diet. So what am I missing?

Sorry, to be pedantic, but I am searching for testimonials that Paleo/Primal improves eyesight since mine seems to be worsening (do not yet have eyeglasses) and I can’t seem to get off this damn sugar train…

    • I apologize Andria for the delayed response…I’m not even sure if you’ll get this message. My eyesight did improve after being on paleo for a while. I’ll go back and edit the post to make it more clear. I do strive for clarity and thanks for bringing this to my attention!
